RightFAX 6.0 historical architecture and setup

RightFAX 6.0 — Historical architecture and setup snapshot

Purpose

Document how RightFAX 6.0 was built and deployed for historical context and upgrade planning.

Applicability / Versions

RightFAX 6.0 era: Administrator’s Guide, Fax Board Guide, and User’s Guide. Windows NT 4.0 clients and server, Brooktrout and GammaLink boards.

Prerequisites

  • Windows NT Server 4.0, VGA display, NIC with Microsoft Networking (NetBEUI, TCP/IP, or IPX/SPX).

  • HP LaserJet III/IV driver present to enable print-to-fax queue creation.

  • Supported fax board installed (Brooktrout or GammaLink).

Architecture and components

  • Server modules: Server, WorkServer(s), BoardServer, Database, RPC, Queue Handler. Roles: convert, schedule, route, store.

  • Admin/UI: Enterprise Fax Manager (admin), FaxUtil (user), FaxStat (service status).

  • Data: proprietary DB + CCITT Group III page images; ~35 KB per page typical.

Installation summary

  1. Install fax boards per board guide.

  2. Run Setup, choose New/Upgrade/Add Component, provide serial, select modules and board type.

  3. Assign Windows service account; share \RIGHTFAX for clients.

  4. Reboot and configure via Control Panel applets: FaxServer, WorkServer, BoardServer.

Telephony and fax boards

  • Brooktrout TR112/TR114: set base I/O address by DIP (e.g., 0x250/0x260), choose IRQ via jumpers, install; DID variants require –48V supply.

  • GammaLink families supported; digital interfaces via separate guidance.

  • Line types: loop-start (in/out), DID for inbound with routing digits, DNIS/ISDN/T1/E1 options.

Client requirements and UX

  • Clients on Windows 3.x/95/NT; FaxUtil as the mailbox, print-to-fax driver, tray icon on 95/NT, PowerBar on 3.x.

  • Cover sheet info prompt on first run; sorting, folders, status, billing codes in FaxUtil.

Inbound routing examples

  • DID routing by assigned digits to user mailboxes.

  • Optional CSID routing via CSID.TBL mapping (routing code → CSID).

Validation

  • Send test from FaxUtil or print-to-fax; confirm conversion and transmission history.

  • Receive test on DID; verify mailbox delivery and routing.

  • Use FaxStat to review module and channel status.

Operations Notes

  • Storage planning: dedicate ≥500 MB; image size ~35 KB/page; purge policy matters.

  • BoardServer must run on the host with the boards; WorkServers can be distributed.

  • Enterprise Fax Manager handles users, groups, LCR, dialing rules, reports.

Limits / Known Behaviors

  • 32-bit Windows clients use print-to-fax driver, not PowerBar.

  • Event Log verbosity can fill logs; use Terse except when diagnosing.

Troubleshooting

  • No job conversion or send → Verify LaserJet driver, print queue, WorkServer conversion role.

  • Inbound not routed → Check DID digits mapping or CSID table; validate line type.

  • Board not detected → Recheck DIP/IRQ and physical slot; follow Brooktrout/GammaLink install steps.

Discrepancies (if any)

  • Product naming in v6.0 docs includes NT/Satellite/Small Business variants which do not map 1:1 to modern SKUs. Treat as historical only.

Change Log

  • 2025-10-10: Created.

  • 2025-10-10: Last validated.
